The course introduces students with the basic concepts and terminology of film and video. The course focus is on the narrative and stylistic elements of the media and their interaction with the audience. Students are encouraged to see film as a complex medium that is both a mean of artistic expression as well as a product of the global industry.

Students will be able to go behind the usual reflex of perception, approach the problem with a trained perception and creative knowledge, independently understand how aesthetic principles of film and video function in practice. They will be encouraged to think critically and engage in independent research through the moving image media.

Video as present moment, reality and fiction. The types of attention in film art. Elements of film: scene, how to frame a story, perception of space, understanding of three-dimensional space within the image, narrative and space, colour as a code. Observers and observed, media and audience, experience of observing. Music as a narrative - how music shapes our perception of motion picture, film music, connotation of a content with using music, music and emotions. Film experience, emotions and structure of a film, analysis of meaning, narrative style that influence the emotional system of the observer. Aesthetics of ugliness, kitsch and political propaganda. Video - architecture – television.

Lectures – analysis of audio and video works, creative workshops and discussions, consultations. During the classes of practical sessions, students work on the individual projects, artistic video works with the topics formulated under the mentorship of teachers and teaching assistances. The course is ended with the presentation of video works.
