The course objective is to enable students to acquire knowledge on sociological and economic aspects of urbanisation in a modern society, which enables better understanding of urban processes and directions and inspires the creation of humanistic theoretical approach in analysing and solving practical urban problems.

Obtaining knowledge on features and trends in urbanisation in developed societies and under-developed countries, obtaining knowledge on city globalization, suburbisation and ruralisation. Knowledge on inequality and social contradictions in modern cities. Obtaining knowledge on the quality of dwelling and living in modern cities. Obtaining knowledge on human demands, values and integration as elements of urban planning. Obtaining knowledge on economics of city land, residential and communal economy, as well as managing city administration, i.e. directing the flows in city economy.

3. Course content/structure: Properties of urbanisation in developed countries: suburbisation, city centre deterioration, urban conflicts, city renewals. City elitisation and recycling. Urbanisation in the under-developed countries: challenges and contradictions of urbanisation in under-developed countries, future of urbanisation in under-developed countries. Cities and globalisation: global cities, city and suburbia, inequality and global cities. City management in global era: managing global processes, cities and industrial, political and cultural items, cities and global government. Dwelling and dwelling cultures in cities: residential needs and residential policy; quality, quality and dwelling modes, social inequalities in dwelling and social segregation. Quality of living in modern cities: freedom of personalities and creativity, personal and social disorganisation. Urban planning: human needs, social values and social integration in planning the city development. Cities and markets. Economic aspects of globalisation and the influence on economic dynamics of cities. Location of companies in cities. Competitive advantage of city centres. Urban land costs. Cities and economics based on knowledge. Urban structures and service industry. Economic geography of urban structures. Informal economy in urban structures. Economic models of urban development. Size of enterprises and size of cities. Stages in industrial development of cities. Dynamically optimal hierarchical city network. Models in savings with city land.

Teaching is performed in the form of lectures, seminar papers and discussions with students on teaching contents.
