ECTS 5

Students are introduced to basic principles of statistical physics so they could solve problems in mathematical models and technique.

Students are capable to solve problems that require basic knowledge of statistical physics applied in mathematics and technique.

Introduction to statistical mechanics. Entropy, ideal gas, and phase space. Thermodynamics, mechanics, chemical equilibrium and reaction rates, free energy density of ideal gases. Quantum statistical mechanics. Mixed states and density matrix. Quantum harmonic oscillator. Bose and Fermi statistics. Non-interacting bosons and fermions. Maxwell-Boltzman quantum statistics. Surface phase transitions and phase transitions in volume. Renorm-groups.

Lectures. Consultations. Theoretical part of the material is being presented on the lectures, accompanied by appropriate characteristic examples of the application of physical principles in mathematics and technique.
