Course specification

Course is active from 01.10.2007..

The aim of the course is to enable students to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge (through practical examples) in the field of designing systems and devices for the treatment of waste streams.
Students should use the acquired knowledge in further training and education, as well as in solving practical engineering problems from in the field of designing systems and devices for the treatment of waste streams.
Introduction; Fluid flow (fluid properties, tube flow, boundary layer theory, fluid flow around the body, energy transfer in fluid flow); Movement of a particle in a fluid (movement of a spherical particle with and without the influence of an external force); Particle distribution and separation efficiency (properties and particle sampling, concentration and particle distribution, particle separation efficiency, particle concentration in closed systems with controlled air supply); Design of industrial ventilation (dilution ventilation, specification of suction hoods, suction hoods of simpler shapes, suction hoods of complex shapes, design of pipelines, choice of fan type and its performances); Precipitation chambers (laminar and turbulent currents in sediment chambers, economic dimensioning of precipitated chambers, dust removal); Cyclone devices (cyclonic flow, efficiency in cyclone, centrifugal collectors, action cyclone concentrators, cyclone with reverse current, multi-cyclone, pressure drop and demand power, multi-cyclone cost analysis); Wet purifiers - scrubbers and absorbers (inertial effects applied to the spherical particle, diffusion to spherical droplets, degree of efficiency for a series of drops, humid chambers, gas absorption by moving droplets, gas separators, absorption towers); Mechanical filters (inertial effects on cylindrical fibers, diffusion on cylindrical fibers, degree of efficiency of the filter, pressure drop through packet filter, efficiency and pressure drop for single layer filter, bag filter); Electro-filters (principle of operation, efficiency, electric field, corona formation, single-stage sedimentation).
Lectures, exercises, seminars, consultations. The lectures show the theoretical part of the material followed by characteristic examples for a better understanding of the presented material. At the exercises that follow the lectures, there are characteristic tasks and examples from practice. In addition to lectures and exercises, consultations are regularly held. In order for the student to take the exam, student should fulfill the prerequisite obligations, to regularly attend lectures and exercises and to do the project assignment.
