Students learn about the basics of digital logic and dedicated computer systems design. The goal is the understanding of basic circuits and units of computer systems.

Knowledge about the basic notions and components of digital systems. Ability to design simple digital logic structures.

Introduction to Boolean algebra. Binary functions. Finite automata. Combinational and sequential digital logic. Standard digital circuits (logic gates, multiplexers, flip-flops, registers, counters etc.). Arithmetic units (adder/subtractor, multiplier). Memory structures (RAM, ROM, EPROM, Flash). Central processing unit. Design of Control unit. Hardware description languages. Logic circuit synthesis. Reconfigurable logic devices (CPLD, FPGA). VHDL principles: behavioral and structural description. Building blocks of combinational and sequential circuits in VHDL. Use of commercial CAD tools for design and simulation of digital circuits. Implementing low complexity modules on reconfigurable devices.
