The educational goal of the course is to introduce students to the concept of strategic project management. Through the course, students will be introduced to the strategic approach in managing projects, taking in to account business strategy on one side, and project characteristic on the other side, in order to achieve organizational goals. The strategic interrelation between the project, as a temporary endevour, and a permanent organization, in which it is carried out, is of great importance for the expected success of the project. This is an integral knowledge for management at the strategic level.
Students who successfully pass pre-exam obligations and the exam are able to: (1) understand the importance of a strategic approach in project management; (2) develop a project strategy; (3) harmonize projects and processes with a business strategy; (4) make decisions about the selection of projects based on the analysis using the acquired knowledge about the relevant models.
Introduction to strategic project management. Project success dimensions. The relationship between project types, project readiness components, and project success dimensions. Interrelation between portfolio management and strategic project management. Project strategy. NTCP model. Project selection. Model Wheelwright & Clark (W & C) .Technology Adoption Lifecycle Model (TALC). Strategic focus. Whole product model. Manage complex projects by combining business strategy and project management. An example of a project strategy.
Teaching is conducted through lectures and practical classes (auditory). Lectures combine theory and practical examples, giving basic concepts and theoretical background in strategic project management. A variety of approaches will be used, during practical classes, including group work activities, open debate, case study solving, joint analysis and presentation of selected projects.
