The aim of the course is to provide a fundamental knowledge of electrical drives and their interaction with power electronic converters and mechanical loads and to introduce various aspects of control techniques of DC & AC drives in industrial electrical drive applications.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Understand the basic concept of electrical drives and their performance and control techniques. 2. Evaluate the power and torque requirements placed by mechanical systems on electrical drives. 3. Specify appropriate power electronic converters in drive applications. 4. Define control algorithm of an electric drive based on a requirement specification and assure the safe operation of the system. 5. Make measurements to analyze electrical machines and drives operation. 6. Identify, formulate and solve various electric motor drive problems.
Introduction. Parts of electrical drive. The dynamic and static properties of electric drive systems. Characteristics of electric drive components: motor, load and transmission elements. Classification of load and its characteristics. Stability of electric drives. Analysis of heating and cooling of electric motors. Selection of motor power rating. Power electronic converters for electric motors. DC motor drives: series and separately excited motors. Open-loop control of DC motors: starting, braking, transient analysis. Induction motor drives. Open-loop control of induction motors: Soft starting techniques, variable-speed operation, scalar control technique, various methods of braking, transient analysis. The fundamentals of closed-loop control of electrical drives. Speed control of DC series and separately excited motors. Speed control of three phase induction motor: V/f control, field-oriented control.
