Course specification

Course is active from 01.10.2007..

To acquire basic knowledge about the combined (intermodal) transport technologies in the context of acquaintance and understanding their importance, basic terminology, basic intermodal transport system elements (actors, resources, and activities) and their interconnections, as well as understanding the basis of their competitiveness (service level, costs, sustainability) and planning politics.
After completing the course, students will be able to recognize the essence and importance of each element of the intermodal transport system, as well as the reasons for the formation and ways of planning and realization of integrated transport chains. Also, students will be able to carry out a comparative analysis of the existing technologies of combined transport from the aspect of their technical and technological base, planning and practical implementation policy, with particular emphasis on container transport technologies
The place and role of the combined transport technology as a complex freight transport system. Intermodal transport system: structure and definition of basic elements. Actors in the intermodal transport system: role and responsibility. Resources in the intermodal transport system: load units (consolidation of load and formation of loading unit in the transport and distribution system), transport and transshipment resources. Activities in the intermodal transport system: transport chains and systemic approach to managing the transport of goods in the realization of transport chains. Combined road-rail transport technology: technical-technological base and organization. Container transport technology: technical-technological base and organization, continental and intercontinental container transport, transport corridors. Combined road-sea transport technologies: technical-technological base and organization. Intermodal transport terminals: definition, division, planning and organization of their activities; Dry ports.
Lectures, auditory and computer practice. Within the course, seminar paper will be completed in which the problem of practical organization and realization of combined transport will be dealt with using of computers. On passing the partial examination, students are not obligated to take a part of the final examination.
