Course specification

Course is active from 27.08.2017..

The educational aim of the course is to introduce students to the basics of modern techniques used in drinking water treatment and wastewater treatment which are one of the most important branches of watereconomy. Students are expected to acquire expertise which they will then be able to use in practice in the field of water supply and sewerage in settlements.
After passing the exam, students will be ready to apply their knowledge in engineering practice by using the acquired knowledge in the field of planning and designing facilities for drinking water and waste water treatment, execution of works and maintenance of the system.
WATER SUPPLY - DRINKING WATER TREATMENT: Physical and chemical properties of water, water quality regulation, basic physico-chemical processes in water treatment: coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, clarification, lamellar sedimentation, flotation, water filtration through a granular bed, membrane separation, adsorption, basic concept of water disinfection, oxidants and disinfectants, absorption, coagulation and flocculation reactors, filters: gravity filters and pressure filters, separation with membranes, specific water purification: iron, manganese and ammonia removal, examples of surface and groundwater treatments. CONSTRUCTION OF SEWERAGE SYSTEMS IN SETTLEMENTS - WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANTS: Types of wastewater, quantity of water for purification, wastewater properties, purified water quality, primary biological process in purification of wastewater, aerobic bacterial flora: activated sludge and immobilized microflora, anaerobic bacterial microflora, lagoon systems, primary purification, biological processes with activated sludge: aerial pools, subsequent settling, SBR reactors, sludge treatment.
Teaching is carried out in the form of audit lectures, auditory and computer exercises. Audit lectures consist of slides which provide students with the theoretical part of the course that is accompanied by distinctive examples from practice for easier understanding of the material. Exercises and examples from the material presented are then applied to specific examples in practice at auditory exercises. For completing computer exercises students use modern and authorized software packages to solve practical problems. In addition to the lectures and exercises, a field trip is also organized and students visit a drinking water treatment plant and a wastewater treatment plant.
