Edcational goal of the Innovation project management course is to develop students' knowledge and skills necessary to manage innovation projects, to lead the change management process with aim of translatting invention to innovation. In this manner, the goal of the course is to develop students' ability to: (1) analyse and categorize innovation projects, (2) determine potential causes of project failure and define project strategy, (3) plan, evaluate and organize innovation projects in business and R&D organizations, and (4) develop budget through evaluation of necessary resources and time and use earned value management (EVM) technique (5) determine the role of the project manager and develop the project team.
After finishing the course, students who carry out pre-exam obligations and pass the exam will be able to: (1) analyze and categorize innovation projects, (2) increase the effectiveness of the project, (3) plan, evaluate, organize and participate in the implementation of innovative projects in the commercial and scientific research organizations (4) estimate and manage project budget and use the earned value method (5) understand the role of project manager and enhance the forming of the project team.
Theoretical concepts: Definition of project and innovation project. Innovation projects as a specific project category and key aspects. Innovation project goals. Managing innovation projects from concept to implementation. Innovation project structure: phases, deliverables, activities. Innovation Matrix. Characteristics of projects radical and incremental innovation. Innovation project value creation and earned value management method. Innovation Project management portfolio: objectives, categories, methods and techniques. Strategic project management. Resource planning. Governance bodies of innovation project (portfolio, program and steering committee). The role of the project manager in forming and leading project management team. Innovation project risk management. Project plan creation - planning, monitoring and supervision of the innovation project. Software solutions in the field of innovation projects and portfolios. Practical classes: Examples of models of radical and incremental innovation projects: similarities and differences. Product innovation planning and implementation. Portfolio management examples of project evaluation (time, risk, cost, type of innovation project implementation). Methods and techniques and examples of innovation projects. Case studies within the field.
Teaching methods involve lectures and exercises. Lectures combine theory with practical examples providing grounds for discussion. Guest teachers from industry will be invited. In the exercises work will be performed both in groups and individually. Part of the exercise will be performed in the laboratory and through e-learning platform.
